nyc and back vol. II

Ok so we went back to n.y.c. and even though i said i was going to take pictures this time...I didn't. So here goes my best attempt at recounting:

Headed up to Chapel Hill last Tuesday to play The Cave with Juanita and The Rabbit, a blues-metal two piece from San Francisco. They rocked ass with such classics as We Live in a Motherfucking Van and a cover of Motorhead's Orgasmatron. And yes, they really do live in a motherfucking van and it is quite possibly the baddest van in these United States. Thanks to all who came out to see us: Mimi from The Pneurotics, Joe from Hammer No More The Fingers (looking forward to playing with those guys, stay tuned), James the Chapel Hill photographer, and our pals from Athens' very own Pride Parade, who were also playing Chapel Hill that night. Killer show and a really cool venue.

From there it was on to Philadelphia PA to play at The Fire, a cool little joint in Fishtown/Northern Liberties of Philly. Once again we were with our new pals Juanita and The Rabbit and their killer van. Thanks to all of the staff of The Fire for letting us post up in their great little apartment and teaching us how to play dominos. They do in fact have fine cheesesteak sandies in that town and even better breakfast joints, but thats neither here nor there.

We rolled in to New York on Thursday to play a show at Manhattan's Cake Shop with two really great stoner/sludge type bands from the city: Heavy Hands and our pals Ancient Sky. Another stellar lineup and a grand show.

Friday we hung out in Manhattan and went to go see Pride Parade kill a 1 a.m. set at Arleen's Grocery. The beer flowed like wine...

Saturday we headed out to Brooklyn to play our final set of the week at the Cameo Gallery in Williamsburg. It was a great little room with a cool atmosphere. Thanks to our old homeboy Hunt a.k.a. "HDHR" for letting us post up at this brownstone Brooklyn Great Gatsby house that he may or may not have legally had access to. Either way, we played the grand piano, slept like kings, got up late, drove 16 hours to Athens and got into town about 5 a.m. Monday morning.

Along with HDHR thanks so much to all our other pals who were so hospitable to us on this recent trip. See ya.

News Wire

Hi I'm Ron Burgundy and here's what's happening in your world today:

....Dead Confederate has been out in my fair city of San Diego playing on KBZT and chatting with Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips. Currently they are on their way to Vegas (best of luck at the nickel slots)...

...The Whigs were robbed in Wisconsin recently and Delta managed to break Parker's guitar during a flight to Cali. Don't worry they seem to be just fine as nothing incredibly important was taken and they are always making light of any misfortune...

...I heard that Blue Flashing Light played a really good set last night at The EARL to a grand and responsive crowd...

...San Diego's favorite band Gift Horse received a pretty good concert review in the Flagpole's online archives. The show was with Sleepy Horses and Pride Parade at Caledonia and good things were also said about los compadres. Thanks Jordan Stepp...

...Speaking of Sleepy Horses, they've recently gotten a live recording posted on Sloan's Southern Shelter...

...The boys from Bambara continue to make waves by receiving a decent amount of plays on WUOG 90.5's regular rotation, selling their album on iTunes (not sure how to link to that), and also getting a live recording posted on the Southern Shelter page...

...News to me: Joel Hatstat did a really good job with the new Deaf Judges album All Rise over at The Bakery, and I am currently listening to that album nonstop. Actually, I am taking breaks to listen to Modern Skirts' All of Us In Our Night which is also fantastic. David Lowery (Camper Van Beethoven, Cracker) and Mike Mills (uh, R.E.M.) did a real number producing that album as well...

...Speaking of Joel Hatstat, his band Pegasuses-XL has somewhat quietly released a new album called Electro Agitators. I think it is a compilation of material off of their first three EP's, and that seems like a really good idea to me. Check out the live recording of the Electro Agitators cd release party on (guess what site?)...

...There is a bunch of other stuff happening as we speak, but in the spirit of reporting the news I'm going to omit some important items. I'll leave the comments section as an open thread for anyone to post relevant (or random) news...

...You stay classy San Diego...

September 22-28

Hey there everybody. We are looking at one of the best weeks of the year as far as shows go for Athenians. Good local bands playing this week, as well as good touring bands coming through. Stuff to do in Atlanta too. The 40 Watt is having a handful of amazing shows in the next seven days, and besides the various annual festivals, (mainly Popfest & Athfest) this is a once-in-a-year type week for them. So I suggest checking out as many shows as possible in the next seven.
